John Lannan Optioned to Triple-A

How good is the Nationals pitching staff. Good enough that John Lannan who has been the opening day starter twice for the Nationals, an posted an ERA of 3.70 and won 10 games for the Nationals last year is being sent down to the Nationals Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse. Lannan was told about this decision from Manager Davey Johnson during the 3rd inning during an exhibition game with the Boston Red Sox at Nationals Park. Lannan was not in the clubhouse after the game for comment

With Stephen Stratsburg, Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann, and Edwin Jackson locks for the rotation. John Lannan was projected to be the 5th starter in the rotation. Ultimately, the Nats decided to go with Ross Detwiler, a former 1st-round pick of the Nationals who has been impressive during spring training, as the 5th starter in the rotation. Many baseball people believed that Detwiler was going to start the season in the Nats bullpen. But with the projected 5th starter at the start of spring training Chien-Ming Wang on the DL to start the season with a hamstring injury, Detwiler impressive spring earned him the nod.
